Accessory Dwelling Units

Message from the Broyhill Park Civic Association

The Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals is proposing certain amendments to the county zoning ordinance that would significantly weaken restrictions on accessory dwelling units.  Below is a description and summary of the proposed amendments, sent by the Mason District Council of Community Associations.  The Mason District Council represents Broyhill Park and other civic and homeowner associations in the Mason District. Please read the summary below and complete the survey as requested in the last paragraph.

PIPING IN BROYHILL PARK SATURDAY APRIL 18

This Saturday, April 18, local bagpiper Eric Rice-Johnston has offered to walk through the Broyhill Park neighborhood playing the bagpipes. Piping will begin at approximately 11:00am and will continue for about an hour. There is no set route, but he will try to cover most of the core neighborhood, weather permitting.

Stream Clean-Up Postponed

At the present time all volunteer activities in the parks are suspended, so the Broyhill Park Earth Day Stream Cleanup scheduled for April 18 has been postponed.  This activity may be rescheduled in the fall, depending on conditions at that time.

Dog found

Found: Small, black and white puppy/young dog, at corner of Add and Arnold in Raymondale on Friday afternoon. No collar, no tags.Very friendly, and energetic. We are taking care of him, until we can locate his owner, or longer if needed.

The Broyhill Park Civic Association meeting scheduled for March 19 at the Leis Center has been CANCELED, due to the fact that Fairfax County Public Schools has canceled all community usage of school facilities from March 14 through April 12.

Newsletter Deadline - February 14th

Have a home business? Advertise in the Broyhill Park Civic Association Newsletter and reach all 750 homes in Broyhill Park. A printed newsletter will be delivered to all homes in Broyhill Park in early March.  To place a business ad in the newsletter, send your business card or ad copy along with a $10 check payable to Broyhill Park Civic Association to the newsletter editor at 3304 Dye Drive, Broyhill Park 22042.  All ads will be set as business card-size, no larger ads accepted, and must include payment. You must be a Broyhill Park resident to qualify for the $10 price.  Non-residents pay $15. The newsletter is printed in black-and-white. The deadline to submit an ad is February 14.

If anyone has any neighborhood news, announcements, activities, or events to include in the newsletter, send by reply email no later than February 14. 

Save the date - Thursday, March 19, for the first Civic Association meeting of the year.

(Gary was scheduled to speak at our previous meeting but had to cancel unexpectly at the last minute.)

Mark your calendar for the Broyhill Park Civic Association's annual Christmas/Holiday Party on December 6.  Come and start the holiday season with an evening of food, fun and fellowship with friends and neighbors. There will be free pizza from Vocelli’s and drinks, a visit from Santa Claus, and something new this year - live music provided by a string quartet from the Falls Church High School orchestra. The party will begin at 6:00 with dinner, followed by Santa's arrival at approximately 7:00. All Broyhill Park residents welcome!

Reminder - Broyhill Halloween Parade

REMINDER - The Broyhill Park Civic Association’s annual HALLOWEEN PARADE and TRUNK & TREAT is coming up this Saturday!

Date: Saturday, October 26*

Time: 2:00pm

Location: Woodley Pool Parking Lot, 7421 Camp Alger Avenue 

J Parade - Put on your Halloween costume and come and march in the parade!  The parade will begin a little after 2:00 and will proceed from Camp Alger Avenue, up Norfolk Lane, across Carol Lane, and down Dye Drive.  Afterwards, the kids can search for treats at each participating trunk in the parking lot.

J Trunk or TreatDecorate your trunk, park in the Woodley lot before 2pm, and give out treats (candy, snacks, small toys, etc.) to the kids after the parade. Register for the Trunk & Treat here: https://signup.com/go/bohSaDa. So far only 9 people have signed up for the Trunk or Treat. There won't be many treats without more trunks, so please signup now!  

All Broyhill Park kids, families, neighbors, and pets are invited! Come and march in the parade, or just come and watch the fun, mingle with neighbors, and hear the unique sound of the bagpipes. All Broyhill Park residents welcome!

Public Meeting: Route 50

The Virginia Department of Transportation is hosting a public meeting on the Route 50 STARS Operational Improvements Study on Monday, October 21st from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Falls Church High School. A presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m.  The STARS (Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions) study will assess potential operational improvements for three miles of Route 50 Arlington Boulevard between Jaguar Trail and Wilson Boulevard. The concepts being studied include improved traffic signal timing/operations, turn lane improvements, turn restrictions, access management, pedestrian enhancements and innovative intersections including roundabouts and interchanges.

As part of this study, we request your input by taking an online survey. The survey will be open for responses beginning October 14, 2019 and can be accessed on the study webpage www.virginiadot.org/route50fallschurchstudy.

Falls Church High School's 75th Anniversary and 2019 Homecoming

Falls Church High School's 75th Anniversary and 2019 Homecoming

October 25-27, 2019 

The annual FCHS Homecoming Parade will take place on Friday, October 25th starting at 5:30pm. FCHS would love to have the Broyhill Park neighborhood come out and watch this school & community event! The  parade route can be found here: FCHS's 2019 Homecoming Parade Route - Oct 25. The parade will last about 30 minutes. Traffic along the route will be impacted. Fairfax County police officers will be directing and stopping traffic as the groups go through the neighborhood. The marching band, floats, cheerleaders, clubs, our Homecoming Court, teams, feeder schools, and alumni will be showing their Jaguar pride for the 75th anniversary as they march through the neighborhood.  

Schedule of events:

Friday, October 25, 2019 - FCHS Homecoming

5:30pm – Community Parade through Broyhill Park neighborhood

6:00pm – Tailgate in the outdoor basketball courts by FCHS door #8. There will be food, music, and games.

7:00pm – FCHS Football–Jaguars vs. Wakefield H.S. Half time will include marching band, floats, Homecoming Court, and 75th Anniversary Celebration.

Saturday, October 26, 2019

10:00am and 4:00pm – FCHS school tours for alumni, community members, and guests.

8:00pm-11:00pm – Homecoming dance for students

7:00pm-10:00pm – FCHS 75th Anniversary Celebration at the 11:11 Restaurant at the corner of Annandale Road and Route 50 (Adults only).

HALLOWEEN PARADE and TRUNK & TREAT

Announcing the Broyhill Park Civic Association’s annual HALLOWEEN PARADE and TRUNK & TREAT

Date: Saturday, October 26th at 2:00pm*

Location: Woodley Pool Parking Lot, 7421 Camp Alger Avenue 

All Broyhill Park kids, families, singles, couples, neighbors, and pets are invited to take part in the annual Halloween Parade and Trunk & Treat on Saturday, October 26th

Parade – Come in costume and march in the parade as we’ll be led by a bagpipe player from the pool parking lot through nearby Broyhill streets and back to the parking lot for the trunk & treat.  Parade begins shortly after 2:00pm.

Trunk & Treat – Decorate your trunk and have treats in it (candy, snacks, small toys, etc.) to give to the kids after the parade. If you wish to offer treats, please signup IN ADVANCE NOW to reserve a parking space at this link: https://signup.com/go/bohSaDa. Last year we had 12 treat cars; let’s see if we can surpass that number this year.  The trunk & treat will take place directly after the parade. 

Come and march in the parade, or just come and watch the fun.  All Broyhill Park residents welcome!

With the Trunk Sale less than 3 weeks away, so far only 6 families have signed up as sellers.  If you're thinking of participating in the sale, please sign up on the Broyhill Park website as soon as possible.  This will help with planning and advertising purposes.  The more families that participate, the more attractive the sale will be to shoppers, so please consider joining with Broyhill Park neighbors and sell your unused, unwanted, outgrown, and excess household goods all in one central location.  Your trash could be another person's treasure!  Here are the details again:

Broyhill Park Community Trash & Treasure Trunk Sale

Date: Saturday, September 21, 2019 *

Location:  Woodley Pool Parking Lot, 7421 Camp Alger Avenue

Time: 9:00am – 1:00pm

The Broyhill Park Civic Association is sponsoring a Community “Trash & Treasure” Trunk Sale in the Woodley Pool parking lot on Saturday, September 21st.  Any Broyhill Park resident wishing to sell household items is welcome to participate.  Please register in advance here: www.broyhillpark.org.  Advance registration will guarantee you a double parking space in the pool parking lot on the date of the sale. You can sell from your trunk or bring tables to setup in your extra parking space.  Setup begins at 7:30.  The sale will be advertised on Nextdoor and Craig's List and we'll have signs on the street and at the triangle. Sellers are also encouraged to post the sale separately.
